Bong

A bong is a cannabis water pipe. It’s available in many sizes and is usually made of glass or plastic.

Bud

A bud is the flower of the cannabis plant and can also be a slang term for cannabis.

Cannabis

Cannabis (AKA marijuana, pot, weed, grass, bud). Cannabis can be smoked, eaten, vaporized, dabbed, or used in a topical ointment.

CBD (Cannabidiol)

CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol, one of the main cannabinoids. It is considered non-psychoactive and is known for its wellness attributes.

Concentrates

Cannabis concentrates are made from dissolving cannabis plant material into a solvent. It has much higher THC levels than flower and produces products like oils, budder, wax, or shatter.

Dabs/Dabbing

Dabs or dabbing are terms for using cannabis concentrates. For more info about dabbing see here.

Edibles

Edible cannabis refers to cookies, brownies, cakes, drinks, etc., that are prepared with cannabis for eating or drinking. They are a very popular alternative to smoking flower or vaping concentrates.

Flower

The smokable buds of the cannabis plant.

420

420 is a number that has come to be associated with cannabis use and sometimes signifies the date April 20 which is linked to cannabis. It is also a very popular time of day for cannabis users.

Hash

Hash is short for hashish. Hash is a resin from the top of the plant, used for consumption. It is usually very potent and can be smoked, chewed, or swallowed.

Hash Oil

Hash oil is a concentrated form of cannabis, usually produced with a chemical solvent. 

Hemp

Hemp is the part of the cannabis plant grown for its fiber. It is non-psychoactive.

Hybrid

A mix of both indica and sativa cannabis strains. A hybrid has been reported by consumers as producing for the consumer a balanced high that ranges between an Indica high and a Sativa high.  Please note: Everyone’s endocannabinoid system is different and this definition is not meant to advise anyone on the effects this product may have on an individual consumer.

Indica

A kind of cannabis plant that is known for its shorter stems and broader leaves. It’s also associated most with giving the consumer a more relaxing sedative effect.  Please note: Everyone’s endocannabinoid system is different and this definition is not meant to advise anyone on the effects this product may have on an individual consumer.

Joint

A joint is a rolled cannabis cigarette. Most dispensaries sell these prerolled. These are referred to as, you guessed it, prerolls.

Marijuana

Pipes

A cannabis pipe is a common way to smoke cannabis. They can be made from wood, plastic, metal, or glass.

Pot

Pot is a slang term for cannabis.

Potency

Potency is the common term for the strength of cannabis, usually measured by the amount of THC. Potency is much higher than in the past and the highest potency is now considered to be 25-35% or more. 

Purity

Purity references the absence of additives and chemicals in cannabis.

Rig (Dab Rig or Oil Rig)

A dab rig or oil rig is a pipe with a heated nail or banger that is used to vaporize cannabis concentrates for inhalation. The use of a rig usually requires high heat from a torch but there are now electronic models regularly available at a dispensary near you.

710

710, like 420 with cannabis flower, is a number now associated with hash oil (OIL upside-down looks like 710) and has its own holiday on July 10.

Sativa

A kind of cannabis plant that is known for its long branches and taller appearance. It’s also associated most with giving the consumer a more uplifting and cerebral effect.  Please note: Everyone’s endocannabinoid system is different and this definition is not meant to advise anyone on the effects this product may have on an individual consumer.

Shatter

Shatter is a version of cannabis concentrate that resembles amber-colored glass. Known for its potency, it’s another popular concentrate for dabbing.

Terpenes

Naturally occurring chemical compounds found in plants and some animals. In cannabis, terpenes are what make certain strains smell or taste different from others as well as contribute to what type of “high” you feel from them. For more on terpenes please see here.

THC

Is the abbreviation for tetrahydrocannabinol, the main ingredient in cannabis that is responsible for the “high” effects.

Tincture

A tincture is a liquid cannabis extract that is usually consumed with a measured dropper. Sometimes flavored and is most effective when placed under the tongue. Tinctures range in potency with some having a ratio of THC and CBD.

Topical

Topical is a cannabis product cream or balm that is applied to the skin. Simple topicals are non-psychoactive but some absorb through the skin, these are called transdermal.

Vape Pen

A vape pen isn’t really a pen at all, it’s the battery used to power vape cartridges. These pens are sometimes sold as disposables as well.

Vaporizer/Vaping

Vaporizing or vaping uses electricity to heat and evaporate cannabis without the use of fire.

Wax

Wax is a form of cannabis concentrate that is sometimes used as a catch-all for any form of dab-able cannabis.
